Sarah Connor Chronicles Terminates the Competition

Though my housemates thought Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles would flop, what the hell do they know? While I must admit that I was (and remain) doubtful, the show's series premiere scored big with audiences.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles Opens Big
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles scored the best opening night demo ratings of any new show in three years.

Thanks in part to strong, aka expensive, marketing, Connor opened to an eye-popping 7.6 rating/18 share among adults 18-49 and delivered around 18.3 million viewers with its one-hour bow Sunday at 8, according to prelim Nielsen national data.

While other shows in the same slot did not perform nearly as well -- don't even get me started on the so-called Golden Globes -- Terminator performed amazingly in every way one can look at it.

Anger at university principals’£142,000 pay raise

University principals in Scotland have been awarded salary increases of more than twice the rate of inflation despite the tight financial climate facing the sector.

A survey by The Herald reveals that in 2006-07 university principals received an average salary of £162,000, a rise of 5.2% on the previous year. The increase represents an additional £142,000 taken out of the sector's annual budget.

The highest paid principals are Professor Duncan Rice, from Aberdeen University, and Professor Timothy O'Shea, from Edinburgh University, who get paid £209,000. Sir Alan Langlands, from Dundee, is paid £206,000.

Lecturers' representatives have criticised the rises, following a 3.5% deal for academic staff.

Holiday Gifts, Expo Survival

During that interview we routinely refer to Playlist's Plays of the Year awards (the year's best digital-music-oriented gear) and also reference Macworld 's Holiday Gear Guide from the December 2007 issue.

The second major event is, of course, next month's Macworld Expo, held from January 14–18. To help prepare you, I offer practical tips for surviving and, more importantly, enjoying your week in San Francisco. I am assisted, in this regard, by a guy dressed as an iPhone.

Battling book fairs try to reach an accord

For the last two years, one of the brightest spots on the literary calendar has been the Brooklyn Book Festival, a bustling affair held in September at Brooklyn Borough Hall. One could attend appearances by Brooklyn writers like Colson Whitehead, Paula Fox, and Joshua Ferris or purchase books from the myriad small publishersUgly Duckling Presse, Hotel St. Georgethat have found refuge in this most literary of boroughs.

Earlier this year, New York Is Book Country, a similar showcase of writers and publishers usually held in Midtown, announced its return after a three-year absence. This should have been welcome news, especially in the face of depressing statistics about declining reading audiences. But BBF organizers were astounded when NYIBC moved its next festival from their originally announced July date to September 14, so that the two festivals would fall on the same weekend.
