Jody, my runaway subject, laid it all out for me one day. On the Riverside Ave. side of the building, she pointed out, is where most of the developmentally disabled folks hang out. On the Sprague Ave. side, drug dealers and anyone connected to the local drug culture can find each other. Jody explained that the subculture of the Plaza is like a family-a very dysfunctional family. I documented Jodys life for six months and what she told me rang true for the most part. At different times of the day, the Plaza veins course with a melting pot of bus riders, social outcasts, business professionals, gangster wannabes and teenage single moms with strollers in tow. Guys in ties mix with strange looking creatures, some pierced with enough metal to fill a scrap yard. I guess its all in how you look at it.
2006 Miss Monette Manor crowned
Staff and family members worked together with residents at Monette Manor in preparation for the Beauty Pageant held Wednesday, Aug. 9. Fourteen beautiful women competed for the title of Miss Monette Manor. Wendy Carpenter, emcee, introduced each contestant. A brief biography of each one was shared. The contestants had the opportunity to share a story or a lifetime accomplishment. Judges, Tracy Routon, Renee Uthoff and Delois Kielhorn, all agreed it was a difficult decision as all of the women were special. Contestants included Thelma M. Marret, Imogene Southard, Addie Malone, Maxine Rowley, Gladys Whitehead, Linda Bailey, Mildred Snider, Glendola Minyard, Daphne Reed, Sharon Wilson, Nellie Woodard, Norene Whiteaker, Audena Maupin, and Mary Jo Golden. Back on the payroll, Boss Up!) Rumor has it 50 Cent had a secret studio session with well-known rapper from France. I think his is from Paris, but I am not sure. The rumor says that this rapper is working on doing things in his native land, but got with the G-Unit General to take things up a notch. Last year 50 performed in France, but I think the song was recorded in New York City. More on this in a few… ICE-T COCO CAKING? This Hollywood writer's strike is really doing more than just making TV and movies WACK, this mess is messing with people's MONEY! These days, the O.G. Ice-T is more of the actor-type than the rapper-type and I heard things are getting tight for the brother. You have to understand, Ice is used to a certain income based on doing “Law & Order." I heard that he and Coco are now hustling her career along in things like calendars and whatever to get it popping.
