Brian Roberts could put Cubs over the top
One of them is one of the all-time great liars. Baseball spring training camps open this month and some big-name free agents are jobless and might have to swallow some pride to prolong their careers and sign for much less than they're accustomed to. They include Barry Bonds, Armando Benitez, Mike Piazza, Kenny Lofton, Shannon Stewart, Livan Hernandez, Sammy Sosa, Bartolo Colon, Shawn Green, Corey Patterson and Tony Clark. If they can't find jobs, Bonds, Sosa, perhaps Clemens and Piazza all would be on the 2013 Hall of Fame ballot. It would be a very impressive group if they all were "clean." But Piazza is the only one who hasn't been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs. Billionaire Rochester sportsman Tom Golisano over the weekend reiterated that he's prepared to do what he can to keep the Buffalo Bills in western New York.
Peace Symbol Says Style, Not Hope
The fact is that we live in a world no closer to nuclear disarmament than it was in 1958. Even here in supposedly peaceful Canada, we are in profound denial about the fact that we are a nation at war. Durable as they may be, I guess symbols can only achieve so much. When a newspaper takes a person off of a beat and doesn't replace that person that is a reduction. Assigning that person's responsibilities among other reporters simply means that they will have to do more with the same amount of time. That is a reduction in what they can do. Moving a full-time reporter out of investigative reporting and not replacing her is a reduction. Mincing words and parsing meaning doesn't help lead to more credible conversation. We all know that all newspapers are facing difficult times and have to make adjustments to survive. How they make those adjustments and how they characterize them will do much to determine whether readers support or object to them. Forthrightness is essential. More on this later. .
