Evacuees from the Monte Carlo watch news coverage on monitors inside the MGM Arena on Jan. 25, the day the hotel-casino caught fire. A consultant says companies that handle catastrophes like fires with honesty and aplomb can secure loyal customers for life.

The burned facade and upper floors of the Monte Carlo after a fire broke out Jan. 25. The fire engulfed parts of the building's facade and roof and forced the evacuation of guests and staff. MGM Mirage had to transfer roughly 5,000 guests to other local hotels and keep them happy.

Will anti-racists cheer for Obama?

I wonder what Lee Jasper, Ken Livingstone's big-mouthed race equality adviser, really makes of the idea of Barack Obama being president of the United States. Really makes of it, deep down inside. I wonder, too, what the Muslim Council of Britain feels about the prospect. Or anyone else who owes their position on the public stage to vociferous campaigning against racism.

I am sure that all of them would tell you that they would welcome such an outcome. America with its first black president! How wonderful! I am equally sure that the truth is rather different.

To help you understand why, I am going to try and answer what appears to be a very different question. What is Bill Clinton up to?

Over the past fortnight the former President has been stumping hard for his wife.

Generation distraction

The Upper Arlington teenager spends most evenings glued to her family's laptop computer -- sending instant messages; checking e-mail; and logging into Facebook, a popular social-networking Web site.

At the same time, her iPod is shuffling through MP3 playlists, the television is providing white noise and her cell phone is buzzing with incoming calls and text messages. Keeping up with the multiple mediums takes work -- and time.

"It's crazy," Kelsey said. "It'll be an hour, and I haven't even touched my homework."

Besides providing an excuse to procrastinate, however, such multitasking -- increasingly routine among today's tech-savvy young people -- could be setting the stage for bigger problems.

A growing body of research suggests that juggling various tasks at once might be driving kids to distraction that can hinder their psychological development.
